What is a Bearish Belt Hold Line?
The Bearish Belt Hold Line is a single-candle bearish reversal pattern. It appears after an uptrend and signals that sellers are taking control. The candle opens at the highest price of the session (no upper shadow) and closes near the low, forming a long lower shadow. This indicates strong selling pressure.
How to Identify
- Prior trend: Must be a clear uptrend.
- Candle shape: A long red (bearish) body, no or very short upper shadow. A long lower shadow, at least twice the length of the body.
- Position: Opens exactly at the high of the session.

Note: The diagram shows a similar shape to a Hanging Man, but the Bearish Belt Hold opens precisely at the high.
How to Trade
- Confirmation: Wait for the next candle to close lower to confirm the signal.
- Entry: Sell (short) right after the confirmation candle closes.
- Stop Loss: Place above the high of the Belt Hold candle (the session high).
- Take Profit: Set at the nearest support level or use a 1:2 risk-reward ratio.
Real Example
Imagine EUR/USD is in an uptrend from 1.1000 to 1.1200. One day, the price opens at 1.1200 (high), then drops sharply and closes at 1.1150 with a long lower shadow touching 1.1130. This is a Bearish Belt Hold Line. The next candle opens lower and continues falling. A trader can sell when the confirmation candle closes, place a stop loss at 1.1210 (above the high), and take profit at 1.1100 (support).
Common Mistakes
- Trading immediately when you see the candle: Always wait for confirmation from the next candle.
- Confusing with other patterns: For example, a Shooting Star has a long upper shadow, while a Bearish Belt Hold has a long lower shadow.
- Setting stop loss too tight: Allow enough room to avoid being stopped out by normal volatility.
