Bullish Marubozu Candle: Strong Bullish Signal

What is a Bullish Marubozu?

The Bullish Marubozu is a single candlestick pattern that indicates extremely strong bullish momentum. "Marubozu" means "bald" in Japanese, implying the candle is shaven-headed, with little to no shadows. For a bullish one, the entire body is a long green (or white) rectangle, showing the close price is significantly higher than the open, and there are virtually no upper or lower shadows.

How to identify a Bullish Marubozu

A typical Bullish Marubozu has these features:

  • Long green (or white) body.
  • No upper shadow or a very tiny one.
  • No lower shadow or a very tiny one.
  • Open price equals or nearly equals the session low, and close equals or nearly equals the session high.
  • The shape resembles a long rectangle without wicks:

Open = HighNo upper wickClose = LowNo lower wickBuyers controlled entire session — open = high, close = low of candle

How to trade the Bullish Marubozu

A Bullish Marubozu in an uptrend shows powerful buying pressure. If it appears after a minor pullback, it can signal continuation. Here are common trading strategies:

  • Enter immediately after candle close: If you’re looking for a buy setup, a Bullish Marubozu confirms dominance of buyers. You can open a Buy position right after the candle closes.
  • Place a Buy Stop order above the high: For added confirmation, wait for price to break above the Marubozu’s high with a Buy Stop order. This helps avoid false entries if the market suddenly reverses.
  • Combine with support/resistance: If the Marubozu breaks through a key resistance level, the signal is even stronger.
  • Real example: Suppose on the EUR/USD H1 chart, after a ranging period, a Bullish Marubozu appears and closes above resistance at 1.1000. You could set a Buy Stop at 1.1010 with a target 30-50 pips away.

Common mistakes when trading the Bullish Marubozu

  • Entering too late: If the candle has already moved a large distance, you risk chasing the price. Always consider market context.
  • Ignoring nearby resistance: A strong Marubozu might reverse if it hits a major resistance level just above. So check key price zones.
  • Not setting a stop loss: Even with a strong signal, always place a stop loss below the candle’s low or the nearest support to manage risk.
  • Confusing with other patterns: A Marubozu might be mistaken for a candle with long shadows if you don’t look closely. Make sure the body has truly minimal or no wicks.
