Candlestick Pattern with Volume Weight Analysis

Definition

Volume Weight Analysis in candlestick pattern trading evaluates the strength and reliability of price patterns based on accompanying trading volume. When a candlestick pattern appears with high volume, the probability of a reversal or continuation increases significantly.

How to Identify

1. Bullish Engulfing Pattern

  • Shape: A smaller bearish candle is completely engulfed by a larger bullish candle.
  • Volume: The bullish candle's volume must be at least 1.5x the previous candle's volume.
  • Support ZoneEngulfs↑ Bullishprev. candle

    2. Bearish Engulfing Pattern

  • Shape: A smaller bullish candle is engulfed by a larger bearish candle.
  • Volume: The bearish candle's volume shows a spike from the previous candle.
  • Resistance ZoneEngulfs↓ Bearishprev. candle

    3. Hammer and Shooting Star

  • Hammer: Small body at top with a long lower shadow, appearing after a downtrend.
  • Shooting Star: Small body at bottom with a long upper shadow, appearing after an uptrend.
  • Volume: Volume on these patterns must exceed the 20-period average.
  • Support ZoneSmall bodyWick ≥ 2× bodySmall body + long lower wick at support = bullish rejection
Resistance ZoneSmall bodyLong upper wickBuyers pushed high but sellers overwhelmed — bearish rejection

    How to Trade

  • Confirmation: Use volume as a filter. Avoid entry if volume is low even if the pattern appears.
  • Entry: Enter after the confirmation candle closes with volume above threshold.
  • Profit Target: Set based on key support/resistance or 1:2 risk-reward ratio.
  • Stop Loss: Place below the pattern's low (for bullish) or above the pattern's high (for bearish).
  • Real Example

EUR/USD H4: After a sharp decline, a Bullish Engulfing appeared with volume double the average of the last 5 candles. A trader entered Buy at 1.1200 (close of second candle), stop loss at 1.1150 (below pattern low), take profit at 1.1300. Price rallied over the next 3 candles, hitting the target.

    Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring volume: Relying solely on candle shape without volume confirmation leads to false signals.
  • Pattern without context: Not combining with trend or support/resistance zones.
  • High volume but weak close: e.g., a bullish candle with high volume but a small body and long upper shadow indicates distribution, not accumulation.
