Market Cycle and Candlestick Signals
Markets move through four distinct phases: accumulation, markup, distribution, and markdown. During accumulation, smart money absorbs retail liquidity; during distribution, they unload positions into strength.
Reading Accumulation with Candlesticks
When price ranges and sweeps liquidity, a bullish pin bar at support reveals strong buying absorption. This candlestick has a small body near the high and a lower wick at least twice the body size.
Repeated doji and inside bar patterns reflect equilibrium between supply and demand. After buy-side liquidity is swept below the range low, a quick recovery with a pin bar often marks the start of a larger accumulation zone.
Reading Distribution with Candlesticks
At resistance or cycle tops, shooting stars and bearish engulfing patterns show that sellers are rejecting higher prices. This price action hints that smart money is distributing rather than accumulating.
Confirming Phase Transition with Market Structure
Candles alone are not enough. Wait for market structure confirmation. After accumulation, a sweep of the low followed by a higher low and breakout of the range high creates a bullish CHOCH or BOS. A FVG at the breakout zone increases the probability.
For distribution, a high sweep followed by loss of bullish structure and a bearish CHOCH signals the start of markdown.
How to Trade Accumulation and Distribution
Real Market Example
On the EURUSD H4 chart, price accumulated around 1.0850–1.0950 for weeks. After sweeping the 1.0850 low, a bullish pin bar formed, followed by a strong break above 1.0950 with a FVG and bullish CHOCH. A trader could enter long around 1.0950, stop below 1.0850, and target 1.1150.
