Deliberation Pattern – A Bearish Exhaustion Signal

Definition

The Deliberation pattern (or Stalled Pattern) is a bearish reversal signal that appears after a strong uptrend. It consists of three candles: two long bullish candles, followed by a small-bodied candle (doji or spinning top) indicating that buying momentum is fading. The name "Deliberation" reflects the market's hesitation – traders are no longer confident enough to push prices higher.

How to Identify

  • Candle 1: A long bullish candle with a large body, opening low and closing higher, showing strong upward momentum.
  • Candle 2: A bullish candle that opens above the close of candle 1, making a new high, but its body is smaller than or equal to the first candle's body.
  • Candle 3: A candle with a very small body, often a doji, opening near the close of candle 2 and trading in a narrow range. This shows that buyers have lost control.
  • Price Action — reading candlestick patterns in context

The key point is that the third candle typically resembles a doji or spinning top, with a tiny body reflecting the market's indecision.

    How to Trade

  • Confirmation: After the pattern completes, go short when price breaks below the low of the third candle (or the second candle) – this confirms the reversal.
  • Stop loss: Place the stop loss above the highest high of the pattern (usually the high of candle 2 or candle 3).
  • Target: Take profit at a minimum of 1:1 risk-reward, measured from entry to stop loss, or at the nearest support level.
  • Real Example

Suppose EUR/USD is in an uptrend, and after a 200-pip rally a Deliberation pattern forms on the H1 chart. A trader enters a sell order when price breaks below the low of the third candle, places the stop loss above the high of the second candle, and takes profit at the previous swing low. The risk-reward ratio could reach 1:3.

    Common Mistakes

  • Entering too early: Taking a trade before the third candle is fully completed.
  • Ignoring the context: The pattern works best at a major resistance zone; without other confirmations, it is easy to get stopped out in a strong uptrend.
  • Confusing it with Three White Soldiers: Three equally strong white candles suggest bullish continuation, whereas Deliberation has a small third candle and warns of a bearish reversal.
