Displacement and Stalling Candles: Momentum and Exhaustion

Definition

  • Displacement refers to large-bodied candles that push price aggressively in one direction, often breaking market structure (BOS/CHoCH) and leaving a fair value gap (FVG).
  • Stalling candles are small-bodied with long wicks, indicating buyers/sellers are losing momentum and a reversal or consolidation may follow.
  • Identification

    Displacement Candles

  • Body covers more than 70% of the range; wicks are very short or absent.
  • Close is strong, breaking nearby highs/lows or key levels.
  • Usually accompanied by high volume and creates FVG.
  • A bullish Marubozu is a classic displacement candle.

    Stalling Candles

  • Shrinking body, longer wicks, showing indecision.
  • Forms at support/resistance or after an overextended displacement.
  • Common types: pin bar, inside bar, doji.
  • A pin bar has a small body and a long wick, showing a strong rejection of price.

An inside bar's body is contained within the previous candle's range, signaling volatility contraction.

    How to Trade

  • After a displacement breaks structure, wait for price to retrace into the FVG to enter in the trend direction.
  • When a stalling pattern appears at a key level, consider a reversal trade with stop loss beyond the wick.
  • Combine stalling with order blocks or FVG for higher probability.
  • Example: A strong bullish displacement creates an FVG; price pulls back into the FVG and forms an inside bar (stalling) – this is a buy signal.

    Common Mistakes

  • Mistaking regular candles for displacement without checking structure break.
  • Entering immediately on stalling patterns without confirmation from key levels or reversal context.
  • Ignoring risk management on displacement trades, as price may continue further than expected.
