Dragonfly Doji – Strong Reversal Signal

What is Dragonfly Doji?

A Dragonfly Doji is a special candlestick with a very small body located at the top, and a long lower shadow, with little or no upper shadow. It looks like a dragonfly. This candle shows that during the session, prices dropped significantly but were pushed back up to close near the open. It indicates rejection of lower prices and strong buying pressure.

How to Identify

  • Very small body (almost nonexistent) at the upper part.
  • Long lower shadow, at least 2-3 times the body.
  • Little or no upper shadow.
  • Appears at the end of a downtrend (bottom) to signal a bullish reversal.
  • How to Trade Dragonfly Doji

  • Confirm the trend: Only trade when the candle appears at the bottom of a downtrend.
  • Wait for confirmation: Do not enter immediately. Wait for the next candle to close above the high of the Dragonfly Doji.
  • Entry point: Place a buy stop order above the high of the Dragonfly Doji.
  • Stop loss: Place a stop loss below the low of the lower shadow (or slightly lower).
  • Take profit: Use resistance levels or a risk:reward ratio of 1:2.
  • Real Example

Suppose EUR/USD is in a downtrend. A Dragonfly Doji forms at a support area. The next candle is a strong bullish candle that closes above the high of the Dragonfly Doji. This is a buy signal. A trader can place a buy order at that high, stop loss below the low, and take profit at the nearest resistance.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trading without confirmation: A single candle can be noisy. Always wait for confirmation from the next candle.
  • Ignoring the trend: Dragonfly Doji is only meaningful at the end of a trend. If it appears mid-trend, be cautious.
  • No stop loss: Every trade needs risk management. Place a proper stop loss.
  • Blind trust: Combine with other indicators like RSI, MACD, or volume for higher reliability.
