Fakey Pattern: Advanced Price Action Reversal

What is the Fakey Pattern?

The Fakey Pattern is an advanced price action reversal setup combining an inside bar with a failed breakout. An inside bar has its high and low entirely within the range of the previous mother bar. When the next candle breaks beyond the mother bar but fails to hold and closes back inside, it traps breakout traders and signals a likely reversal.

How to Identify

  • Identify a mother bar with a clear range.
  • Wait for an inside bar that forms completely inside the mother bar.

  • In the following session, price must break the mother/inside-bar range and then close back inside – this is the fakey trigger.

  • In SMC terms, look for fakeys at order blocks, demand/supply zones, often after a liquidity sweep of a previous high/low.
  • How to Trade

  • Wait for the fakey candle to close before acting; do not trade the breakout in real time.
  • Enter when price breaks the fakey candle's open/close level (trigger) in the direction of the reversal.
  • For a bearish fakey, place your stop loss above the high of the failed breakout; for a bullish fakey, below the low.
  • Target liquidity pools or structural levels, with a minimum 1:2 risk-to-reward ratio.
  • Use CHoCH/BOS to confirm structure shift, especially when the fakey forms at the end of a move.
  • Real Example

On EURUSD H1, after a strong downtrend, price reached an old demand zone and printed an inside bar. The next candle spiked above the mother bar but quickly closed back inside. When price broke below the fakey candle's low, buyers entered with a stop below the sweep low; price reversed and rallied more than 100 pips.

    Common Mistakes

  • Confusing a real breakout with a fakey: a strong close outside the range invalidates the pattern.
  • Entering before the candle closes, which often leads to being stopped out by the sweep.
  • Taking fakeys against the larger trend without structural confluence.
