Hammer Candle - Bullish Reversal Signal

What is a Hammer Candle?

A Hammer candlestick is a single candlestick pattern that appears at the bottom of a downtrend, signaling a potential bullish reversal. It is named after its shape, which resembles a hammer: a small body near the top and a long lower shadow at least twice the length of the body.

How to Identify a Hammer

A typical Hammer candle has these features:

  • A small real body located near the top of the candle.
  • A long lower shadow (at least twice the length of the body).
  • A very short or non-existent upper shadow.
  • The color does not matter much: a green (bullish) body is slightly more bullish, but a red (bearish) body is also acceptable.
  • Support ZoneSmall bodyWick ≥ 2× bodySmall body + long lower wick at support = bullish rejection

    How to Trade the Hammer

  • Entry: After a Hammer appears in a downtrend, wait for confirmation from the next candle (a bullish close). Then enter a Buy trade.
  • Stop-loss: Place a few pips below the low of the Hammer's shadow.
  • Take-profit: Aim for the nearest resistance level or a risk-to-reward ratio of at least 1:2.
  • Real-World Example

Imagine EUR/USD drops from 1.1000 to 1.0900. At 1.0900, a Hammer forms with a small body and a 20-pip lower shadow. The next candle closes higher at 1.0910. This is a buy signal: enter at 1.0915, set stop-loss at 1.0880 (below the shadow), and take-profit at 1.0980 (near resistance).

    Common Mistakes

  • No confirmation: Buying immediately upon seeing a Hammer without waiting for the next candle can lead to false signals.
  • Ignoring the trend: A Hammer is only valid after a clear downtrend. In ranging markets, its reliability drops.
  • Insufficient shadow: If the lower shadow is less than twice the body length, it is not a true Hammer.
