High Wave Candlestick – Volatility Signal

Definition

The High Wave candle is a candlestick with a small real body but very long upper and lower shadows. It shows the market is highly indecisive: price spiked up and down but closed near the open. This signals strong volatility and a potential reversal.

How to Identify

  • Small body (color – green or red – is not important).
  • Upper shadow at least twice the body length.
  • Lower shadow also at least twice the body length.
  • Overall looks like a candle with long tails on both ends.
  • Open ≈ CloseLong upper wickLong lower wickExtreme volatility, both sides tested, closed at the same level

    How to Trade

  • Wait for confirmation: Never enter immediately after seeing a High Wave. Wait for the next candle to close in your desired direction.
  • After an uptrend: If a High Wave appears after a strong rally, it's a warning of a bearish reversal. Wait for a bearish confirmation candle then sell.
  • After a downtrend: If a High Wave appears after a sharp decline, it's a signal of a bullish reversal. Wait for a bullish confirmation then buy.
  • Risk management: Place stop loss above the upper shadow (if selling) or below the lower shadow (if buying).
  • Real Example:

Gold price rises from 1800 to 1850. Suddenly a High Wave appears with upper shadow hitting 1860, lower shadow at 1840, closing at 1845. This indicates buying pressure is weakening. The next candle drops to 1830 – confirmation to sell.

    Common Mistakes

  • Trading immediately: High Wave is only a warning, not an action signal. Beginners often enter early and get stopped out.
  • Ignoring the overall trend: In a sideways market, a High Wave might just be noise, not meaningful.
  • Stop loss too tight: Long shadows show price can move sharply, so stop loss should be wide enough to avoid being hit.
