What is a Kill Zone?
A Kill Zone is a specific time window with high liquidity and volatility, driven by the opening of major trading sessions. Institutional traders actively execute orders during these periods, which often leads to stronger directional moves and clearer technical signals.
Identifying Kill Zones
Candlestick Confirmation
Price touching a support/resistance zone inside a kill zone is not enough. You need a confirmed candle to filter false moves.
Pin bar: long wick and small body. The wick shows rejection; the close signals the direction. A bullish pin bar after a retest of support is a strong reversal clue.
Engulfing: the second candle fully engulfs the first candle. A bullish engulfing after a down move indicates buyers took control.
Inside bar: the candle is completely inside the high and low of the previous candle. A breakout with a strong candle can be traded in the breakout direction.
How to Trade
Real Example
During London open at 08:30 UTC, price breaks the Asia high then returns to retest it. A bullish pin bar forms at this level, confirming buyers are defending the breakout. You enter long, stop under the pin bar low, target the previous London resistance zone.
