Ladder Bottom Pattern – Bullish Reversal

Definition

The Ladder Bottom is a bullish reversal candlestick pattern consisting of 5 candles, appearing after a strong downtrend. Structure: candles 1 and 2 are long bearish, candle 3 is a doji or small body, candle 4 is a small-to-medium bullish with a long lower shadow, and candle 5 is a strong bullish closing above all previous candles. This pattern signals exhaustion of sellers and return of buyers.

Price Action — reading candlestick patterns in context

How to Identify

  • Prior trend: Clear downtrend.
  • Candle 1 & 2: Long bearish bodies, little to no shadows.
  • Candle 3: Small body (doji, spinning top) – hesitation.
  • Candle 4: Bullish with small-to-medium body, typically long lower shadow.
  • Candle 5: Strong bullish, closing above bodies of candles 1 and 2.
  • How to Trade with SMC/Price Action

  • Confirmation: Volume spike on candle 5.
  • Entry: Buy limit at support of candle 4's long lower shadow, or buy stop when candle 5 breaks above candle 2's high.
  • Stop Loss: Below candle 3's low (or below candle 1's low for aggressive).
  • Take Profit: Minimum target equal to the structure's height (from candle 1 low to candle 5 high). Use trailing stop.
  • Real Example

On H4, EUR/USD dropped from 1.2000 to 1.1800. A Ladder Bottom formed with candle 3 as doji at 1.1800, candle 4 edging up to 1.1820, candle 5 surging to 1.1880. Trader enters buy at 1.1830 (breakout), stop loss 1.1790, take profit 1.1950.

    Common Mistakes

  • Confusing with inverted Three Black Crows.
  • Entering before candle 5 close, resulting in false signal.
  • Stop loss too tight, getting hit before recovery.
