Definition
Liquidity Sweep and Stop Hunt are key concepts in SMC (Smart Money Concepts). They describe the actions of large institutions (smart money) to collect liquidity from retail traders' stop losses before pushing price in the true direction.
How to Identify
Liquidity Sweep occurs when price quickly breaks a significant swing high/low and then reverses immediately. Signs:
- Price breaks a clear support/resistance level.
- Candles with long wicks or strong engulfing patterns.
- Volume spike (if available).
Stop Hunt is part of a sweep, focusing on triggering stop losses placed above highs or below lows. Often appears as:
- Pin bars with long wicks touching liquidity zones.
- Fake breakout patterns (double tops/bottoms).
How to Trade
- Identify liquidity zones: Find recent swing highs/lows where stop losses accumulate.
- Wait for sweep: Price breaks the zone and creates a long wick or reversal candle.
- Enter trade: When price returns to the sweep zone, enter in the opposite direction of the breakout.
- Stop loss: Place SL above the high (for sell) or below the low (for buy) of the sweep.
- Take profit: Target next liquidity zones or order blocks.
Real Example
Assume EUR/USD is in an uptrend, making higher lows. Price hits a resistance zone, breaks above to a new high, but immediately reverses sharply. This is a Liquidity Sweep: it swept buy stops above the old high, then reversed. Traders can enter sell when price returns below the old high.
Common Mistakes
- Confusing sweep with real breakout: Confirm with reversal candle or divergence.
- Entering too early: Wait for confirmation (e.g., engulfing or pin bar).
- Improper stop loss: Place SL outside the sweep zone to avoid being swept again.
