Mat Hold Pattern – Strong Bullish Continuation

Definition

The Mat Hold pattern is a 5-candle bullish continuation formation that appears in an uptrend. It signals strong buying momentum after a brief consolidation. In SMC, it represents a liquidity grab before a structural breakout.

How to Identify

  • Candle 1: Long bullish (white/green) body, demonstrating dominant buying pressure.
  • Candles 2-4: Three small bearish (black/red) candles with bodies completely inside the range of candle 1. Ideally, they have small real bodies, short wicks, and close near their opens.
  • Candle 5: Another long bullish candle closing above the high of candle 1, confirming continuation.

    How to Trade with SMC

  • Entry: After candle 5 closes, wait for a pullback to the opening level of candle 5 or to a Fair Value Gap (FVG) formed between candles 4 and 5.
  • Stop Loss (SL): Place below the low of candle 1 (or below the entire pattern's low) – more logical below an old liquidity zone.
  • Take Profit (TP): Measure the height from candle 1's low to high and project it upward, or target previous resistance.
  • Real Example

On EUR/USD H1, after a strong rally, three small corrective candles formed within the first big bullish candle, then a final bullish candle broke out. A trader could buy on the close of candle 5, SL below pattern low, TP at prior high.

    Common Mistakes

  • Confusing with Rising Three Methods: Mat Hold's consolidation candles are more tightly contained within candle 1, whereas Rising Three Methods may have gaps or wider bodies.
  • Entering too early before candle 5 closes: risks false pin bars.
  • Placing SL too tight under candle 5: likely to be swept before the move resumes.
