Morning Doji Star Pattern – Advanced Reversal

Introduction

The Morning Doji Star is a powerful variant of the traditional Morning Star, featuring a Doji as the second candle. The Doji indicates extreme market indecision, signaling a potential reversal from downtrend to uptrend. In SMC, this pattern often appears at liquidity grabs or after a strong decline, providing an opportunity to trade sell-side liquidity sweeps.

Structure of the Pattern

The pattern consists of three candles:

  • Candle 1: Long bearish candle, large body, short lower wick.
  • Candle 2: Doji candle, very small body, open and close nearly equal, representing balance.
  • Candle 3: Long bullish candle, closing above 50% of candle 1's body, confirming reversal.

    How to Identify

  • Pattern appears after a clear downtrend.
  • Candle 2 must be a standard Doji (small body, long upper/lower wicks or none). Look for low volume on candle 2, then a volume spike on candle 3.
  • In SMC, verify the pattern forms at a demand zone or after a sell-side liquidity sweep.
  • How to Trade with SMC

  • Entry: Wait for candle 3 to close above 50% of candle 1, then buy at close or on pullback to a nearby FVG (Fair Value Gap).
  • Stop loss: Place a few pips below the low of candle 2 (Doji) or below the nearest demand zone.
  • Take profit: Target 1 at previous high, target 2 at buy-side liquidity or next resistance.
  • Real Example

Imagine EUR/USD dropping from 1.1200 to 1.1000. At 1.1000, a Morning Doji Star appears: a strong bearish candle, a Doji, then a strong bullish candle closing above 1.1050. Trader buys at 1.1050, SL 1.0980, TP1 1.1120, TP2 1.1200.

    Common Mistakes

  • Confusing with a continuation pattern if candle 3 doesn't close strongly.
  • Entering too early before candle 2 completes.
  • Ignoring volume or higher time frame confirmation.
  • Conclusion

The Morning Doji Star is a strong reversal signal when combined with SMC and Price Action. Always wait for confirmation and manage risk strictly.
