Definition
The Rising Three Methods is a bullish continuation candlestick pattern consisting of five candles, often forming in a strong uptrend. It signals that buyers are pausing to consolidate before pushing the price higher. This pattern aligns with the Break of Structure (BOS) concept in SMC, confirming buyer dominance.
How to Identify
The Rising Three Methods has a distinct structure:
Crucially, the three small candles must remain entirely within the high-low range of the first candle, ideally above its 50% level. The fifth candle must close above the high of the first.
Market Psychology
The initial strong bullish candle shows aggressive buying. The three small candles represent a brief consolidation where sellers fail to reverse the trend. This is an ideal entry for traders looking to buy at a discount or into an order block. The breakout on the fifth candle confirms that buyers remain in control, often accompanied by a BOS and the formation of a Fair Value Gap (FVG) that provides support.
How to Trade
Entry: Wait for the fifth candle to close and confirm the pattern. Place a buy stop a few pips above the high of Candle 1, or enter aggressively on the close of Candle 5 if it's a strong bullish move. For SMC traders, look to enter from a demand zone or order block during the consolidation.
Stop Loss: Place below the pattern's lowest low, usually just below the low of Candle 1 or the consolidation area.
Take Profit: Target a minimum distance equal to the entire pattern's height (from Candle 1 low to Candle 5 high), or use Fibonacci extensions of the prior swing. Consider partial profits at key resistance levels.
Real-World Example
On EUR/USD H4 chart, during an uptrend from 1.0500 to 1.0700, a Rising Three Methods formed near 1.0650. Candle 1 rallied 50 pips. Three small bearish candles huddled within a 20-pip range, holding above the first candle's low. Candle 5 broke to 1.0680, and price continued to 1.0750. A buy entry above 1.0660 with SL below 1.0630 and TP at 1.0750 would have yielded a profitable trade.
