Unique Three River Bottom – Rare Bullish Reversal Pattern

Introduction

The Unique Three River Bottom (UTRB) is a rare bullish reversal pattern that appears at the end of a downtrend or after a liquidity sweep. It is an advanced price action setup often traded with volume, supply/demand zones, and order blocks.

Definition and Structure

UTRB consists of three candles in this sequence:

  • Candle 1: Long black/bearish candle (bearish marubozu or large body), showing strong downside momentum.
  • Candle 2: Small-bodied candle with a long lower shadow or a doji, making a lower low below Candle 1's low but closing back above its midpoint, indicating sellers are losing control.
  • Open ≈ CloseUpper wickLower wickTiny body = buyers and sellers in perfect balance → indecision
  • Candle 3: Strong bullish candle closing above Candle 2's high or above Candle 1's open, confirming the reversal.

    How to Identify

  • The pattern must appear in a clear downtrend or after a sharp sell-off.
  • Candle 2 must have a small body, a low that creates a new bottom, and a close near the center of its range.
  • Candle 3 must confirm by closing above Candle 2's high, ideally above the midpoint of Candle 1.
  • Volume tends to drop on Candle 2 and rise strongly on Candle 3.
  • Combine with support areas: order blocks, demand zones, or liquidity pools below.
  • How to Trade

  • Entry: Buy after Candle 3 closes above Candle 2's high. Alternatively, wait for a retest of that level.
  • Stop loss: Place below Candle 2's low (the pattern's lowest wick), adjusted by ATR.
  • Take profit: TP1 at the nearest resistance, TP2 at the prior swing high, or trail your stop based on market structure.
  • Risk: Aim for a minimum R/R of 1:2; ideally 1:3.
  • Real Example

Suppose EUR/USD falls from 1.1200 to the 1.1000 zone. After a long bearish candle, price makes a new low at 1.0980 as a doji, then a bullish candle closes at 1.1040. Entering at 1.1040 with a stop at 1.0975 and target at 1.1110 gives roughly a 1:3 reward-to-risk ratio. If this occurs at a demand zone and shows signs of accumulation, the success probability is high.

    Common Mistakes

  • Catching the falling knife without the third confirmation candle (only two candles printed).
  • Ignoring the broader context: UTRB fails if the support is just before major news.
  • Setting stops too tight; they get swept by candle wicks.
  • Not watching volume: without strong volume on Candle 3, the signal is weak.
  • Confusing UTRB with Morning Star: Morning Star's second candle does not need to make a lower low, and its third candle often closes above Candle 1's open, while UTRB requires a doji second candle with a tiny body.
