Defining Trend Acceleration
Trend acceleration occurs when the speed of price movement increases significantly compared to the previous period. Instead of only looking at trendlines, traders can read sequences of consecutive candles to recognize a momentum "burst". When bullish candles appear one after another with expanding bodies and shrinking wicks, buyers are likely in control and the trend is accelerating.
Identifying Through Consecutive Candles
A series of consecutive up or down candles with dominant body sizes is a typical sign of acceleration. Always combine this with volume and the context of a higher timeframe to filter noise.
Three White Soldiers and Three Black Crows
The Three White Soldiers pattern consists of three consecutive bullish candles with each body growing or remaining large, closing near its high, and opening inside the previous body. It signals strong demand, especially when it appears after a pullback.
On the opposite side, the Three Black Crows consists of three consecutive bearish candles with widening bodies, closing near their lows, revealing accelerating selling pressure.
Marubozu - Long Bodies with No Wicks
A Marubozu candle (no wicks) shows absolute control by one side. A long white Marubozu following several small bullish candles signals upside acceleration; a black Marubozu does the same for a downtrend.
How to Trade Acceleration Signals
Real-World Example
On the EUR/USD H4 chart, price breaks resistance after a consolidation. Then three consecutive bullish candles appear with bodies of 30, 55, and 80 pips and only wicks of a few pips. This is an acceleration signal. A trader could enter long on a pullback to the 0.382 Fibonacci level, place a stop below the second candle's low, and let the target extend based on the height of the whole sequence.
